Silver melt value calculator
Enter a weight and a purity to see what the silver inside an item is worth at today's spot price. The price field fills in automatically. Overwrite it to test a different price, or to use the price a dealer actually quoted you.
Melt value is a floor, not a selling price. A dealer buying scrap or junk silver will usually pay somewhat below full melt to cover refining and margin. Collectible coins can be worth far more than their metal content.
Melt value of common silver coins
Actual silver weight (ASW) is the pure silver content of an uncirculated coin. Worn circulated coins contain slightly less. Values update with the live price in the currency selected above.

Before selling anything old, check the date and mint mark. A handful of dates in each of these series are scarce enough that the collector value dwarfs the melt value. Suspiciously light or glossy "old" coins are a common counterfeit pattern. How to detect counterfeit silver covers the weight, dimension and magnet checks.
Troy ounces, grams and kilos
Silver is quoted in troy ounces of 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than the ordinary (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35 grams. The conversions behind the tiles above are:
- Price per gram = price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035
- Price per kilo = price per troy ounce × 32.1507
- Price per tonne = price per troy ounce × 32,150.7
A 1,000-ounce London Good Delivery bar weighs about 31.1 kg. A COMEX futures contract is 5,000 troy ounces, roughly 155.5 kg.
Why the price you pay differs from spot
Spot is a wholesale benchmark for unallocated metal in London, not a shop price. Retail buyers pay a premium over spot for fabrication, distribution and dealer margin. Sellers receive a price somewhat below spot. The premium is largest on small items: a 1 oz government coin typically carries a far higher percentage premium than a 100 oz or kilo bar, and premiums widen sharply when retail demand spikes. How silver is priced explains the LBMA benchmark, COMEX futures and retail premiums in detail, and how to buy physical silver covers dealer choice and resale.
When the silver price moves
Silver spot trades nearly around the clock, from about 22:00 UTC on Sunday to 21:00 UTC on Friday, with a short daily break. Liquidity peaks when London and New York overlap, roughly 12:30–16:00 UTC. That window includes the LBMA Silver Price auction at noon London time and the COMEX open. On weekends the page holds Friday's closing price.
Frequently asked questions
How is the silver price per gram calculated?
Divide the spot price per troy ounce by 31.1035. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so silver at $40 an ounce is about $1.29 a gram.
Why is the silver price at a coin dealer higher than spot?
Spot is the wholesale price for large bars. Coins and small bars carry a premium over spot that covers minting, distribution and dealer margin, and that premium is proportionally larger on small items.
What is melt value?
Melt value is the spot value of the pure silver an item contains: its weight in troy ounces multiplied by its purity, multiplied by the spot price. It ignores any numismatic or collector premium, and a buyer will usually pay somewhat less than full melt.
When does the silver price update?
Silver spot trades nearly around the clock from about 22:00 UTC Sunday to 21:00 UTC Friday. The figures on this page refresh every minute while the market is open and hold the last price over the weekend.
